🔮 紫微斗数
Purple Star Astrology — Revealing your twelve palaces of destiny
紫微斗数 · 十二宫位 · 四化飞星
What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数), meaning "Purple Star Astrology," is one of the most revered Chinese destiny systems, often called the "Emperor's Astrology" for its historical use in imperial courts. Originating in the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), it maps 100+ stars into 12 life palaces (宫位) based on your birth data, creating a detailed blueprint of your entire life — personality, wealth, career, relationships, health, and more. Unlike Western astrology which uses planetary positions, Zi Wei uses a calculated star chart based on the Chinese lunar calendar.
History & Origin
Zi Wei Dou Shu is attributed to Chen Tuan (陈抟), a Song Dynasty Daoist sage, though some traditions trace its roots to the Tang Dynasty. It was originally reserved for the imperial family and high officials, hence its nickname "Emperor's Astrology." The system was kept secret for centuries, passed down through oral transmission and handwritten manuscripts. It became more widely available in the 20th century, particularly in Taiwan and Hong Kong, where it flourished and modern practitioners developed new analytical methods including the Four Transformations (四化飞星) system.
How to Use This Reading
1. Enter your birth data — Exact lunar birth date and time are needed to calculate the correct star positions across your 12 palaces.
2. Read the Life Palace (命宫) first — This is the center of your chart, representing your core personality, talents, and overall life direction.
3. Check major star placements — The 14 major stars and their brightness levels (庙旺得利) in each palace determine the strength and nature of influence.
4. Study the Four Transformations (四化) — 化禄 (prosperity), 化权 (power), 化科 (fame), 化忌 (obstacle) reveal the dynamic changes and opportunities in your life.
5. Consider palace interactions — Stars and transformations flying between palaces show how different life areas influence each other.
The 12 Palaces (十二宫)
14 Major Stars (十四主星)
Four Transformations (四化)
Abundance, opportunity, smooth progress. Where 化禄 lands shows where blessings and wealth flow easily.
Authority, control, achievement. Where 化权 lands shows where you gain influence and can take command.
Reputation, recognition, academic success. Where 化科 lands shows where you gain respect and visibility.
Difficulty, obsession, blockage. Where 化忌 lands shows where challenges, worries, or persistent issues arise.
Five Element Bureau (五行局)
The Five Element Bureau (水二局, 木三局, 金四局, 土五局, 火六局) determines your chart's fundamental frequency and the starting point for calculating your Da Xian (大限) life periods. The number in the bureau name (2–6) indicates the age at which your first 10-year luck period begins. A 水二局 starts at age 2, while a 火六局 starts at age 6. This creates the timing framework for all predictive work in Zi Wei Dou Shu.
Interpretation Tips
✦ Star brightness matters enormously. A star in 庙 (thriving) is powerful and beneficial; in 陷 (fallen) the same star may express negatively or with difficulty.
✦ 化忌 is not purely bad. It shows where you're most invested and where growth comes through struggle. It often points to your greatest area of eventual Mainy.
✦ Read palaces in pairs. The opposite palace (对宫) always influences the palace you're reading. Life Palace and Travel Palace are a pair, as are Wealth and Fortune.
✦ Major stars set the tone; minor stars add flavor. Don't get lost in minor stars. Start with the 14 major stars, understand their palace placements, then add layers of detail.
✦ Da Xian (大限) changes the landscape. Every 10 years, your focus shifts as new stars take command in your luck period chart.
