What is Qi Men Dun Jia?
Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲), literally "Mystical Door Escaping Technique," is an ancient Chinese divination system that was originally developed for military strategy. It arranges the Eight Gates (八门), Nine Stars (九星), Eight Deities (八神), and Heavenly Stems on a 9-palace Luoshu grid to reveal the most auspicious timing and direction for any action. Legend attributes its creation to the Yellow Emperor and its most famous practitioner was the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮), who used it to win battles through superior timing and positioning. Today it is used for business decisions, travel planning, competitive strategy, and finding optimal timing.
History & Origin
Qi Men Dun Jia is one of the "Three Styles" (三式) of Chinese metaphysics, alongside Tai Yi Shen Shu and Da Liu Ren. Its origins are traced to the Yellow Emperor's era (~2700 BCE) and were refined through the Warring States period. The legendary strategist Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 CE) famously used Qi Men for military campaigns, as did the Tang Dynasty general Li Jing. The system was historically one of the most closely guarded secrets in Chinese metaphysics — its name reflects "escaping" (遁) from danger through the "mystical doors" (奇门). Modern applications extend far beyond warfare to business, negotiations, and life decisions.
How to Use This Reading
1. Choose your date and time — Qi Men is a time-based system; the chart changes every 2 hours (one 时辰). Select the moment you're asking about.
2. Identify the Open Door (开门) — The Open Door palace reveals the best direction and timing for your endeavor.
3. Check the Gate quality — Among the Eight Gates, 生门 (Life) and 开门 (Open) are most auspicious; 死门 (Death) and 惊门 (Shock) suggest caution.
4. Read Heaven and Earth plates together — The relationship between the Heavenly Stem on the Heaven plate and the Earth plate reveals the flow of energy.
5. Consider the Nine Stars — They indicate the cosmic weather affecting each palace, from favorable (天心, 天任) to challenging (天芮).

Interpretation Tips
✦ Finding the Open Door (开门) is key. The palace where the Open Door resides indicates the best sector, direction, and timing for your endeavor.
✦ Gate + Star + Deity create the full picture. A good Gate with a favorable Star and benevolent Deity is ideal. Even a good Gate can be undermined by hostile Stars or Deities.
✦ Void (空亡) means latent potential. A palace in void has energy that hasn't manifested yet. Things may not happen as expected, or outcomes are delayed.
✦ Best for: business decisions, travel planning, competitive strategy, choosing timing for important actions, and finding the most favorable direction.
